Con mèo đen có linh hồn và chiếc
xương sườn của tôi, mỗi buổi sáng thức
dậy không bao giờ rửa mặt, mỗi buổi
sáng thức dậy không bao giờ đánh răng;

con mèo đen có đôi mắt bằng đất
sét, mở ra và nhắm lại, hay cứ
mở ra và không bao giờ nhắm lại,
trong lúc lên thang xuống thang, mang theo

linh hồn và chiếc xương sườn của tôi,
mà quên rằng, tôi đã sống những ngày
hôn ám biết bao, tự thuở nào và
tại sao thì tôi đành chôn kín, trong

cái túi đựng đầy những đoạn chú thích,
được lượm lặt từ rất nhiều mẫu chuyện,
để cấu thành câu chuyện về con mèo
đen, mang linh hồn và chiếc xương sườn

của tôi; dĩ nhiên, đó là con mèo
đen có đôi mắt bằng đất sét, chứ
không phải bất cứ đôi mắt nào khác;
mù đặc, trong lúc lên thang xuống thang

The black cat with my soul and a piece of
my rib, wakes up every morning not
washing its face, every morning not
brushing its teeth; the black cat with clay-like

eyes, opening and closing, or open
-ing and never closing, as it climbs up
and down the stairs, dragging with it my soul
and a piece of my rib, forgetting that

i had lived much darker days, since when and
why it was i had buried them in my
pocket full of allusions, gathered from
many different tales, strung together

to make up this story about the black
cat with my soul and a piece of my rib;
of course, that is the black cat with clay-like
eyes, not any other kind of eyes; even

as, the black cat climbs up and down the stairs.

I would like to nominate "The Black Cat" by Khe Iem which is even more impressive with its sparse, innovative imagery and plays of metaphors, as I understand the writer's first language is not English.

Thanks for this, a fine poem. Always hard to make a critique of a translation, but did just wonder if you could find something more concrete for 'allusions' to go in the pocket. Wondered if 'keys' would work, with their metaphorical significance. Just a thought. (I change to “notes” – KI).

Poems representing our Forum in the December IBPC

We have chosen three very fine poems to represent our Forum in this month’s InterBoard Poetry Competition -- one by a poet whose work is new to our Forum (and new to English: the poem was translated for posting on the Forum), and two by poets who are long-time Forum members. Our entries are:

“Black Cat,” by Khe Iem, in a translation by J. Do Vinh which neatly captures its “wonderful, image rich, quirky” qualities.

“The Loneliest Smoke,” by Bill Brando, a vividly imagined Christmas blues.

“Les Miserables” by Julie Mazza (TornScorpio), a “deeply engaging” daughter’s song of longing.

Kudos and luck in the judging to all three poets.
